  • 1st BAP-SBP Cup [Oct.2-13, 2007]

    1st BAP-SBP regional basketball opens Oct. 2-13

Filipino regional basketball gets a major shot in the arm with the staging of the first Baketball Association of the Philipines-Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas(BAP-SBP) Cup from October 2-13 in selected venues spread all over the country.

Manila-based leagues, including the premier Philippine Basketball League and commuity-based ones such as the Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) and the Natinal Basketball Conference (NBC) have joined hands to make the project a reality.

The format is 16 teams representing 16 geographical regions have been divided into four groups of four teams each wherein the teams will play each other of their group once, with the top two in each division advancing to the sudden-death playoff round.

"The divisions did not follow the traditional regional groupings of provinces," said project director Noel Zarate. "We made sure there there will be balanced competition. Some regions had to be merged while known basketball hotbeds had to be divided."

Among the cities being eyed to host the elimination round are Baguio, Metro manila, Naga, Bacolod, Cebu, Cagayan de Oro and Davao.

Players from the PBL, MBBA and NBC as well as free agents may play for any of the three teams representing their own birthplace or the birthplace of their mother or father.

Age limit will be 30 years-under with each team must have two teenage recruits with scholarship grant waiting for them should their team win the championship.

The BAP-SBP, headed by its president global business tycoon Manuel V. Pangilinan, through its executive director Patrick Gregorio has thrown its full support to the league.

The heads of the other leagues, PBL Commissioner Chino Trinidad and chairman Gil Angeles, MVBA chairman Gov. Oscar Moreno and Commissioners Willy Generalao and Jose Murillo and NBC president Tac Padilla and EVP mayor Bambol Tolentino of Tagaytay City have all expressed cooperation with the undertaking.
It's ironic to see limited efforts from players with maximum salary.
I wish they would apply "sabermetrics" in those financially challenged PBA teams to acquire players who are value for their money.

Pilipinas Cup groups bared; 16 zones listed

THE GROUPINGS for the upcoming SBP Pilipinas Cup have been determined during a recent meeting of the organizing committee at the Philippine Basketball League (PBL) office in Pasig City.

Sixteen teams representing 16 zones are set to battle for regional pride in the two-week tournament under the auspices of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas set to begin this October.

Three of the country’s amateur leagues – the PBL, the Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) and National Basketball Conference (NBC) – have all joined forces for this undertaking.

Group A will be composed of North Luzon, Central Luzon and contingents representing Northern and Central Metro Manila. North Luzon – the Ilocos, Cagayan Valley and Cordillera Administrative Regions – is expected the host the group’s elimination games in Baguio City.

CaLaBaRzon’s Antipolo City will likely entertain fellow Group B squads from Southern Metro Manila, MiMaRoPa and Bicol.

An interesting skirmish is expected in Group C made up of teams from the Visayas with Panay, Negros (Occidental and Oriental), Cebu (along with Bohol and Siquijor) and the Samar-Leyte area.

Finally, Group D will have entries from North Mindanao which will join forces with the Caraga Region, the Davao region, the Zamboanga Peninsula and Socsksargen which has united with the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

The province of Misamis Oriental through Gov. Oscar S. Moreno has already expressed its interest to host the Mindanao group’s games.

AS of the moment, not one team has yet to be formally organized. However, allow me to detail how Philippines was divided into the 16 zones with one team from each zone. The traditional regions used in the Palarong Pambansa (National Games) were discarded and were revised taking in consideration the balance of competition and other economic, political and social reasons.

To simplify the eligibility rules, a player may see action for the team representing either (1) his own birthplace or (2) the birthplace of one of his parents. The age limit is pegged at 30 years old.

Please take note also that the team names are not yet final. It may be changed to suit the liking of the team organizer or sponsor. Try-outs for the teams will be announced very soon.
