this is an unfair group...

RP seeding was based on previous asian championships... seeding does not necessarily reflect its strength

iran and jordan placed 6th and 7th in Fiba-asia 2005. they should have been separated

china should dominate this group - if their A team will play. however, since its only their team B, the rest of group A has an equal chance.

RP ready to rumble:
Reyes: RP ready to take all comers in Olympic qualifier
By NELSON BELTRAN
The Philippine Star

With many lessons learned in two tournaments the last 14 days, the SMC-Philippine five has metamorphosed into a highly competitive squad that could well give any team a run for its money in the coming FIBA-Asia Olympic qualifier in Tokushima, Japan.

RP team coach Chot Reyes made that assessment as the Nationals completed a tough two-week grind capped by their triumphant finish in the Smart Four-Nation Manila Invitational Championship Sunday night at the Araneta Coliseum.

“From March to today, the difference was like night and day. The team has grown into a different creature,” said Reyes, moments after the RP squad conquered Lebanon, 87-81, for the crown in the pocket tourney also participated in by China and Syria.

Syria showed up China, 90-85, for third place in the tourney organized by the BAP-Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas and sponsored by Nike, Gatorade, Victory Liner, Casino Alcohol and Omega Pain Killer.

Jimmy Alapag scored 16 of his 23 points in the second quarter while Mark Caguioa made 13 of his 19 points in the final period as the Nationals repeated their 88-83 win over the Lebanese Thursday for the championship that further underscored the team’s readiness for the Tokushima joust from July 28-Aug. 5.

The RP squad will play Kuwait in two tune-up games Friday and Saturday before leaving for Japan on July 25.

“We now have the game to compete in Japan. But can we win it? That I don’t know

because that’s a confluence of good game and good fortune. At least, we have taken care of 50 percent of the equation. Now we only hope for good stroke of fortune,” said Reyes.

“Between now and July 28, our concentration will be the three teams (China, Iran and Jordan) we will play in our group. The coaching staff will dissect each and everyone in those teams,” Reyes added.

The Nationals have sized up the Chinese, the Iranians and the Jordanians, and Reyes felt the Nationals have a good chance against them.

Against the Lebanese who were qualifiers in the last two World Championships, the Nationals did well, showing the big improvement they’ve learned from their training stints in the US, Thailand, Iran, Belgrade and Taiwan.

Standing tall in the Manila Invitationals, Alapag won the Most Valuable Player award and led the Mythical Five Selection that also included teammate Kelly Williams, Lebanese Joe Vogel and Fadi El Khatib and Syrian Michael Mandaly.

Jimmy Alapag held his own in a fierce shootout with Vogel in the first half as the Nationals seized a 36-35 lead at the turn.

The Talk 'N Text prized playmaker fired three triples with the last coming before the buzzer sounded, giving the Nationals the one-point edge going into the final half.

LETS GET IT ON!!!
PHI - Romero vows to restore Philippines' pride
MANILA (Southeast Asia Basketball Association Champions Cup) - Mike Romero has pledged to "bring back the glory" when he leads the Philippines in the Southeast Asia Basketball Association Champions Cup next week.

Romero's team - formed entirely of domestically-based players - will be the first Philippine side to compete internationally since FIBA lifted a suspension on the country in February of this year.

Basketball is the most popular game in the country, and Romero knows all eyes will be on his team.

"Let's bring back the glory," he said.

"This is the first Philippine team that will compete internationally since the FIBA suspension.

"And there is pressure because 87 million Filipinos are expecting no less than the championship."

Romero has won back-to-back titles with Harbour Centre in the Philippines Basketball League, but said nothing would compare to his new task, which is to steer the national team to an international crown.

"I consider this the biggest challenge of my life - winning for our country," he said of the coming tournament, which also serves as a qualifier for the FIBA Asia Champions Cup.

If the Philippines qualify, the all-pro team being coached and handled by Chot Reyes will take the place of the PBL selection, which is looking at two of Julius Nwosu, Jessie King and Sam Ekwe as their allowed import quota.

President Manny Pangilinan made a rare appearance as the team was unveiled at the Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum and was just as optimistic as Romero.

He said: "I'm quite excited - it's very important for us to win the championship if only to signal the return of the Philippines in international competition.

"There's no option but to win."

Pangilinan admits he doesn't expect the title to come on a silver platter since all the competing countries are allowed to field as many as two imports, mostly Americans.

He added: "Will the games be a blow-out?

"It will be difficult because each of the other teams are also allowed to field imports, like Thailand and Malaysia.

"We have to be vigilant with what these teams will be doing."

Hi,
I think jordan team has a historical chance
to have a birth in the olympics next year, by being
in the first 4 rankings in this cup.

they have almost complete team eqiupped with players
at a high level of experience and skill (esp. Alkhas and douglas) and a very
professional coach (portuguese Mario Palma) who guided angola to the olympics and will try to repeat it with the jordan team.

i think jordan have a great chance to qualify from this year and get a
3-0 record.
for the second team i think it will be the philipines.

jordan is a strong team defensively, i think they have the defence to beat any team in tokushima. even with a loss against china b team, it does'nt necessarilly mean that they can't beat that team. jordan has a solid frontline and the addition of rasheim gives them a formidable backcourt which they lack in the past years. as for douglas or is it daghlas? i think mark caguiao is way more better than that guy.

This is without doubt the group of death! Sorry to all Supporters of the RP team, but despite having a good squad I do not think they will even make the last eight! This group is really a tough one. China will definitely make it through without any of the teams causing them problems & Jordan are a much stronger squad right now as we've seen in the Jones Cup. Even Iran is pretty good. But here is how it'll be:

1 - China 3-0
2 - Jordan 2-1
3 - Philippines 1-2
4 - Iran 0-3 (although Iran are definitely one of the top ten Asian teams)

Coz If that's the case and we lost to Iran then will end -up 0-3!

Kahit na ba tatlo 7 footer ng Iran, basta gumana lang ang outside shooting ng Pinas, It will draw out the electric posts out of the lane, then pwede na tayong mag penetrate.

JOR/CHN - Jordan send the Wright signals

Boxscores | Photo gallery

TOKUSHIMA (FIBA Asia Championship) - Rasheim Wright, with splendid second half support from Zaid Alkhas, shouldered the responsibility of scoring as Jordan wrapped defending champions China in a defense web to post a 78-65 margin in Group 'A' on Friday.

There was very little to choose between the teams - in terms of scoring at least in the initial phases. China, fielding their 'B' team in the Championship, were well served by Bo Wang and Yong Wang in the early stages of the encounter.

Rasheim Wright, who top scored the match with 31 points - along with two assists - countered the Wang duo, but it took Zaid Alkhas' timely strike of form for Jordan to find their rhythm. Zaid Alkhas, who accounted for 22 points and eight defensive rebounds, began rather sedately, but once he found his bearings early in the third quarter, there was no looking back for Jordan.

It was at this juncture, buoyed by the confidence provided by the duo, Mario Palma made some crucial changes in his defense plans. As a result, China who seemed to be hitherto moving around rather comfortably began to repeatedly run into walls of stoic defense put up by Alkhas and Islam Abbaas. The latter collected seventeen rebounds - 10 of them offensive - as China struggled with their second shots.

"Our defense proved it," Palma beamed after the win. "This is the first time in history that Jordan have beaten China. I think it's a remarkable day for me," he said.

"With every team as good as the other in our group, the side with better plan and homework is bound to clinch. And that's exactly what gave us the winning edge today," he added.

Chinese coach Adijiang shrugged off the defeat saying, "after all we have brought our second best team here."

Scores
Jordan 78 (Rasheim Wright 31, Zaid Alkhas 22) bt China 65 (Ming Yang 15, Bo Wang 15). Quarterwise: 17-18, 35-30, 60-49.

China did pretty well considering that their two starting forwards along with the starting guard fouled out. LOL

Wright was AMAZING. Hats off to this African-American dude. China had no one who could guard him.

A very young Chinese team but as always very tall and would have a commanding height advantage over the much smaller filipinos on Sunday.

RP vs. China, Kelly Williams was AMAZING! :D

Why RP five lost to Iran

By TITO TALAO

TOKUSHIMA, Japan — In three 10-minute quarters, or about the same time it takes an average basketball-loving Filipino to take an afternoon nap, the dream of an Olympic Games appearance for a basketball team in 35 years turned into nightmare Saturday when San Miguel-Pilipinas lost to Iran in its opening preliminary round game in the 24th FIBAAsia Men’s Championship.

Thrown into the company of voracious wolves, including defending China, during the draw, the Nationals were hoping to use the Iranians as stepping stones for a much-awaited confrontation with the Chinese who they beat during the 4-Nation Manila Invitational a week before they departed for Japan.

Instead they got buried under tons of Iranian offense for three-quarters of the game, compounded by their most woeful shooting performance to date.

The eventually came back behind the heroism of Kerby Raymundo and Mick Pennisi, SMC-RP’s 10th and 12th men in the roster, only to get waylaid in the end by a forewarned, but ignored, bench technical that put the Nationals in a do-or-die situation with China Sunday night.

Whatever the outcome of SMC-RP’s attempt to scale the Great Wall, here in bullet form is the tangible anatomy of the defeat that shove the Nationals’ Olympic endeavor at the precipice of a disastrous end.

• SMC-RP missed 33 of their two-point field goal attempts and 18 of their 3-pointers.

• Mark Caguioa shot 1 for 11 with 7 turnovers and 0 assist.

• Jimmy Alapag went 1 for 12 with 1 assist.

• Dondon Hontiveros, Gabe Norwood and Kelly Williams went 2 for 12 from the floor combined.

• Though both teams had the same number of turnovers (17), Iran had a 13 to 11 edge in steals and a 6 to 1 advantage in blocked shots to offset a 20 to 10 offensive rebounding deficit.

• The final score, 75-69, indicated a close game but Iran’s winning margin would have been much bigger had it converted even half of its 24 missed free throws.

Iran 60 Jordan 54

TOKUSHIMA (FIBA Asia Championship) - Iran became the first survivor from the 'Group of Death', with a Phoenician rise to beat Jordan 60-54 on Sunday. The win put Iran as the first team to enter the quarterfinal round from Group 'A', leaving Monday's encounter between Jordan and Philippines a virtual knock-out for the other berth.

Like it was in a majority of other matches of the day, Iran transformed 5-point deficit at the end of third quarter to a six point victory margin at the end of the match. Saturday hero Mahdi Kamrany's free-throw conversion following a blistering three-pointer with 03:30 left in the third quarter put Iran ahead for the first time in the match.

Along with giving Iran a 37-36 lead, those efforts also injected a sense of poise and confidence in the whole Iranian approach. There was a sudden spurt of energy and intensity in the way Iran played.

Where Iran grew in confidence, Jordan went on the decline.

"I'm really glad we are through (to the next round)," Iran coach Toroman Rijko heaved a sigh of relief. "Advancing from this group makes me feel really confident for the next stages of the Championship," the Serbian added.

"I think the pressure of playing in the toughest group got to my players in the early stages of the match. But they showed a lot of character to stage this comeback. Now I think we can beat any team in the competition."

Jordan coach Mario Palma attributed the defeat to "total lack of control in the second half."

"We made so many mistakes in the second half. My players just stopped playing the way we wanted."

Scores
Iran 60 (Hamed Ehadadi 18, Mohammad Nikkah 16, Aidin Nekkah 10) bt Jordan 54 (Enver Soobzokov 14). Quarterwise: 11-21, 21-33, 46-41
