I BELIEVE the "Jelani McCoy is a Fil-Am" urban legend died down a long time ago.

When it first came out, I looked at a picture of McCoy and concluded that the story may have been fueled by the fact that he had Chinese-looking eyes and that he lived in an area with a significant Fil-Am or Asian population.

Like what I said in another thread, PBA teams at the time (1999) were scouring the globe for their one direct-hire Fil-foreign recruit hence the fierce competition to outdo each other. It reached to the extent that any player with a Hispanic-sounding surname or even the slightest hint of Asian features would be considered.

It was Ali Peek who said that Jelani McCoy back six years ago. At that time Jelani McCoy was still playing in the NBA and did not want to play here. No one has been able to prove, though, his Filipino lineage. If he is a legit Fil-am he could be a great catch for the RP team. He is only 29 years old and can still play. There's a good chance though that he could be Filipino because he comes from the Los Angeles area.

I've heard this news during the invasion of Fil-am players in the country. that was in the year 1999 and i also read an article about jelani McCoy in the Sports weekly magazine written by Mr. Henson. According to him, he was eyeing by Ginebra to be their direct hire Fil-am. Unfortantely, McCoy already committed to play for Seattle in the NBA. Also in the same year, same experience happened to ABAP(Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines) when Brian Viloria won the Gold in the 1999 World Amateur Boxing Championship in the Flyweight division. ABAP is eyeing the services of Viloria to be part of RP boxing team that will compete in the 2000 Sydney Olympics on their quest for the elusive gold. Unfortunately, ABAP is already late. Viloria is commited to be part of the US boxing team.

YES, Clark Hugh "Pep" B. Moore played for San Sebastian College. He has also seen action for Hapee in the PBL and also for the Cebuana Lhuillier version of the national team.

A very young and raw Pep first came here in 2000 to try out for the professional MBA but did not make the grade. Instead, he found his way to San Sebastian College, winning a pair of NCAA crowns along the way.

He is reportedly back in the United States.

The Real McCoy

Jelani McCoy seems not a pure black so as Juwan Howard (see the similarity)

But they aint have any pinoy blood

The only McCoy that is Filipino is this Ex-San BEda College player Kerwin McCoy 6'4 who played back late 90's

And Since Jelani and Howard look similar we still have our own Howard

We all know Stephen Howard(Played IMport San Miguel and Sta Lucia, NBA Utah Jazz) has a Pinay Wife...lets wait if their fruit will grow 6'9 or more and we will have our own Howard

This was a topic ages ago but If he really is Fil-Am someone from the SBP should have talked to him.I'm not sure If he is Fil-am or he just doesn't want to play in/for the Philippines.

I read somewhere that Jelani Mccoy said that he was not Filipino..correct me if i were wrong.

He went to St Augustine, a catholic high school in San Diego and was a star and in the papers all the time. With 200,000+ Filipino/Filipino Americans in San Diego this would have been big news or someone would have claimed him. I remember him well, he is not even part Pinoy. He also has the rep of being a head case, hence the short NBA career given his enormous talent.

I think we should be doing everything we can to find out if Jelani Mccoy is Fil-am or not then at least there wouldn't have to be this stupid talk of naturalizing people.

from what i can remember, quinito henson has already asked mccoy if he was a fil-am during the NBA finals...mccoy said he is not...

i think that's the end of the story...

Anthony suntay once interviewed jelani mc coy. Mc coy replied "Sasampalin Kita" through the interview, he revealed he knew some tagalog words because he has filipino friends, not because he has pinoy blood.

IIRC this was from the same nba finals interview big ticket was talking about.

Jelani grew up in the areas of Oakland, San Diego and Los Angeles which have big Filipino Communities and he has a lot of Filipino Friends. That's why he learned a lot of Pilipino words majority are cuss words hahaha :D He knows if guys are saying bad things about him even if they are tallking in Pilipino. He's 100% Afro-American who just likes to hang around with Flips.

It doesn't say he isn't pinoy. He may not be, but there is nothing in this quote.

NBA vets eyed by RoS, Meralco01/22/2012

Two prospective imports with impressive NBA credentials, one of whom reportedly has a Filipino mother, are being tapped by Rain or Shine and Meralco for the Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner’s Cup which will have no height limit for reinforcements.

In a report by InterAKTV, the Elasto Painters, still in search for that elusive first Finals stint in the league, are eyeing Jake Voskuhl, a nine-year journeyman of five NBA teams but whose most distinguished stint came in 2002 when he started as center for the Phoenix Suns.

The PBA Commissioner’s Cup is slated to start February 10.

“We’ve already sent him a contract offer. Medyo may inaayos na lang na maliit na bagay, pero malaki ang tsansa na makakalaro siya for us,” Rain or Shine governor Mamerto Mondragon said.

The 34-year-old Voskuhl is listed at 6-foot-11and also saw action at Chicago, Charlotte, Milwaukee and Toronto. He had a chance to play with the Los Angeles Clippers when he was signed to a non-guaranteed contract last Sept. 27, 2010 but was waived 10 days later.

According to Rain or Shine assistant coach Caloy Garcia, Voskuhl was actually one of two choices coach Yeng Guiao had on his short-list of reinforcements, including another NBA veteran Earl Barron who played for the veteran PBA mentor in 2005 with Red Bull. However, talks with Barron did not fall through after he was signed by the Golden State Warriors recently.

On the other hand, Meralco is tapping another NBA veteran in Jelani McCoy, a second round draft pick of Seattle in 1998 and who had played for the Los Angeles Lakers, Atlanta Hawks and Denver Nuggets in eight years with the league.

McCoy hit the sports round of talks in 2000 when he reportedly offered to play for Barangay Ginebra and the National team, his mother being a Filipina.

The 34-year-old McCoy, listed as a 6-foot-11 power forward-center, has also had stints for two teams in the Chinese professional league and, most recently, for Caceres 2016 in Spain.

Meralco coach Ryan Gregorio had actually travelled to Los Angeles earlier this month to scout for the Bolts’ import for the Conference Cup, having his sights focused on players who played in the D-League showcase in LA.

But he may have balked at the prohibitive costs of recruiting a marquee player out of the highly-competitive D-League, many of whom would rather stake their talents at preparing and being recruited into the NBA’s full and regular season in 2013-2014.

“There are a lot of good players, but not worth it if you’ll make a buyout. “(Buying out) Class A players in the D-League is worth $45,000, Class B is around $35,000 and you have to give them a contract offer aside from the buyout. McCoy looks fine and he’s an NBA veteran,” Gregorio told InterAKTV.
