  • By the way Jay,

MVP was deeply dismayed when the letter he sent requesting the NCAA to adjust its season schedule was turned down, the letter was coursed thru NCAA Season 87 Host, the University of Perpetual Help Dalta System (UPHDS) after San Sebastian-Recoletos had officially turned-over the hosting job to UPHDS which was way before the NCAA Season 87 is to start on July 2, 2011. The reply of the NCAA then was such request should be done to each NCAA school.

Its unfortunate that the Stakeholder Leagues who were instrumental in toppling the BAP and forming the SBP would not like to fall under the control of the SBP and look at themselves as co-equals. Said leagues are apprehensive that the SBP would go the way of the BAP and abuse its powers. It did not help that in the past former PBL Commissioner Chino Trinidad who lent his PBL Referees to the NCAA had a falling-out with then SBP Executive Director Noli Eala. At the moment, the SBP is hoping that the diplomatic charm of present SBP Executive Director Sonny Barrios would be able to improve more the relations with the key basketball stakeholders.

Chances are Filipino basketball fans can see the likes of Asian stars Yi Jianlian, Wang Zhizhi and Sun Yue of China, Iran's Hamed Haddadi and Samad Nikkhah Bahrami, Sam Daghles and Rasheim Wright of Jordan, Chinese Taipei's Lin Chih-chieh and Takuya Kawamura of Japan in the flesh in 2013.

The best basketball players in the region are likely to play in Manila should the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) award the Philippines the hosting of the 2013 FIBA-Asia Championship For Men.

In a short but worthwhile meeting with FIBA's top officials a few days ago, Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) president Manny V. Pangilinan said the Philippines plans to submit a bid of hosting the tournament, serving as qualifier to the 2014 World Basketball Championship in Spain.

The country has not hosted the biennial meet since 1973 when it was still known as the Asian Basketball Confederation (ABC) Championship.

"I told Mr. Baumann that we will make our bid. And they told us that the deadline of bidding is until the end of September," said Pangilinan of his meeting with FIBA president Ivan Mainini and secretary general Patrick Baumann at the close of the 26th edition of the FIBA-Asia tournament recently held in Wuhan, China.

Yi, the Washington Wizards' power forward, steered China back to the championship with a pulsating 70-69 win over Wright and Jordan in Sunday's final. The 23-year-old Chinese was named the tournament MVP and a member of the Mythical Team together with Iran's Haddadi and Bahrami, Daghles of Jordan and Japan's Kawamura.

So far, Lebanon has already signified its intention to host the next FIBA-Asia it was supposed to stage this year, but abandoned later on owing to unfavorable playing condition.

"Of course, we'll be up against other countries which want to host the tournament. But let's see what we can do," Pangilinan added.

What could tilt the balance in favor of the Philippines, however, is the construction of a new basketball coliseum at the Mall of Asia, and the subsequent refurbishing of the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

"I also told them that businessman Henry Sy is building a new coliseum. And then we will refurbish the Smart-Araneta Coliseum, so we'll have two good venues for basketball," said the business mogul.

Hosting the tournament, which also serves as the Asian qualifier to the 2016 Olympics, is likewise a big follow up to the country's modest finish in Wuhan where Smart Gilas-Pilipinas placed fourth after advancing to the medal round for the first time in the last 24 years.

In addition, hosting the event would similarly enhance the national team's shot for one of three slots at stake for the world championship.

Pangilinan has vowed to continue Gilas' basketball program all the way through 2013.

"So at least until that time, we'll re-organize the program and see whether we can qualify to the 2014 world championship," said the SBP president. — JVP, GMA News

SBP is working hard on this as the FIBA-Asia officials toured SBP Deputy Executive Director Bernie Atienza around the Wuhan Sports Center Gymnasium and explained why China was the one hosting the FIBA-Asia Championship and compared it to present venues that the Philippines have. Hopefully the SM Mall of Asia Arena can incorporate the requirements cited by the FIBA-Asia Officials into its on-going contruction as Sir Bernie had already talked to their officials on the said matter. On the SMART-Araneta Coliseum, a big renovation has to be done as it is not about the playing court alone.

True. What many may forget was that the SMART-Gilas program, while patterned after the NCC program, was borne out of reality more than anything else. There's no doubt in everybody's mind that the best scenario will always be to field the best players of the country to represent us in international meets. This would have been come to fruition when Noli Eala convinced the PBA Board to allow their players to represent the national cause.

However, after the 2007 Tokushima debacle, the PBA became lukewarm to the idea of lending their players to the national cause. And with Noli Eala being removed from the PBA Commissioner's Office, and with Sonny Barrios taking the position of the PBA Board, the idea of having PBA players suiting up for the national team dissipated.

Eala though eventually became part of the SBP and, being familiar with the mood permeating the PBA Board, decided to take the best option available - that is, the rebirth of the NCC program. The blueprint was practically copy paste - the securing of a naturalized player, the hiring of a topnotch international coach, the development of top collegiate players, the frequent international exposure, the exposure to play against PBA teams, heavy funding from the private sector and paying the players to make them stay in the amateur ranks, etc.

And Eala was right. The SMART-Gilas program was truly the best way to provide the result - the ultimate long-term plan in getting the job done. It will be long, it will be expensive, it will be difficult. But it will yield the best results. Not the short-term approach of borrowing PBA players and training them for 6 months. The problem though was that the program's objective was too short and immediate. They formed the SG program in 2008 and was expecting results three years after. There was no problem if everything followed according to schedule, but there were several problems that came its way:

          1. Players came and went. Original picks like Rabeh Al-Husseini, Ryan Buenafe, Rey Guevarra didn't stay long. Other players who were considered did not join like Paul Lee and Junmar Fajardo.

          2. Players deemed for naturalization took some time. We started with CJ Giles, who stayed with us for more than a year only to become a headcase. Jamal Sampson came in, stayed for a few months, and was much worse. Other options were considered before we got to Marcus Douthit. And it took some time before Douthit's naturalization came about.

          3. The opportunity to learn from the PBA hit a snag when Air 21 and the national team had some problems in the latter's first game in the PBA. So instead of playing for the title, the PBA removed the chances of the national team to replicate NCC's feat in 1985, thereby relegating all their games exhibition in nature.

Ultimately though, the problem was the loftiness of the goal. It would have been more realistic to say that the real target is 2013. And the precedent will prove such. The NCC program was broached up in 1981 and the fruits were reaped in 1986, or five years after. That should have been the same objective of SMART-Gilas, unfortunately, this would not just be expensive, but it may be too long for the impatient basketball fan. What MVP and the SBP may have failed to realize is that they could have educated the basketball fan to wait for the results for a longer period because the program was long-term by nature. Instead, they succumbed to the clamor of the fans for them to immediately deliver results. It was lofty, but it was not realistic.
But we cannot change the way most filipino fans thinks as its really in our genes that we are impatient with regards to waiting for results. That's why a lot of us like to play the game of chance like "lotto", sweepstakes or jai-alai instead of just waiting your interest income in a savings account. Or that is why we Pinoys would rather take a chance of working or migrating overseas than wait for our country to improve economically. That's also why we Filipinos love the high scoring and fast paced game of Basketball than wait for the long game of Soccer Football or Baseball. We Filipinos are not really that patient. Another thing, even when we are growing-up, we do not really recognized an effort of anybody unless he is a winner, champion or gold medalist .... any kind of runner-up is not good enough.

Your guys are working hard for this while our guys are only good at making fake promises to the basketball fans and public in Lebanon

We used to have a couple of businessmen like MVP who used to care about basketball in Lebanon but unfortunately all these guys have abandoned the sport due to the dirty politics and since there were others that wanted to see them fail instead of succeeding.

Anyways I really hope the Asian Championships take place in Manila cause you guys deserve to host such an event which hasn't taken place in Philippines for almost 40 years!

            • Sir Nards, what are the chances of Rajko Toroman being renewed and with the latest debacle of Smart Gilas what is the prevailing sentiment of SMC group, are thay already willing to helpout with MVP or they want to form the national team by themselves. What is the reaction of Noli Eala, is it of disappointment just like most of us or vindication ?

yeah its more on the latter, unlike the former where everyone is pretty much on our own backyard.

Just cant help but take note of our chances to form a powerful, tall and fast lineup once every stakeholder get along, if i were to streamline my choices (outside of the wildcard players because of the uncertainty) here is my list:

                STARTERS
                C Douthit 6'10
                PF Williams 6'7
                SF Washington 6'8
                SG Devance 6'7
                PG Norwood 6'5

My fave starting lineup, high flying, athletic and very explosive off the break. Every position has the ability to penetrate, great lateral defense, rebounding and hops. Double-up offense variations will thrive in this lineup while allowing freelance opportunities to maximize player creativity and mismatches. The only glaring flaw is the undersized PF with Williams and speedier guys vs Devance, but nothing gang rebounding and tactical substitutions cant fix.

                BENCH
                C Slaughter 7'0
                PF Fajardo 6'9
                SF Aguilar 6'10
                SG Parks 6'4
                PG Lassiter 6'2
Our second unit is slower and less explosive but remains potent offensively. Focal point of plays belong to Ray Parks and we actually get taller despite the decline in overall athleticism. As with the starters this is a very strong rebounding unit and more halfcourt oriented.

                11th and 12th man
                C/PF Thoss 6'8
                PG Banchero 6'1
We need an extra big body for situational matchups, esp on times where Kelly will be overmatched by bigger guys. As for Banchero ive seen clips and he is a born scorer, cant pass up on such talent.

The talent we need is staring us right in our faces, look at how we were able to succeed as a top four team in Asia without sending our BEST players unlike all other FIBA contenders. Just imagine if we sent our strongest team with enough time for cohesion, under a coach with deep understanding of the international game. With Powerade, SMB and other PBA NTs that is something that we havent done before. i just hope that stakeholders ultimately realize this and join the cause.

For years we always considered China, Iran and Korea as our strongest opponents, but honestly our biggest foe remain ourselves.

Lets put it this way, like any other employee when Toroman was hired MVP gave him specific objectives and the ultimate goal. Now at end of contract if you are MVP, do you think Coach Rajko achieved both his objectives and Goal.

Even though there's already an announcement that the program is to continue and the objective for 2013 has been set by MVP, the details on the matter has not been discussed yet, so there is no group yet has been asked by MVP for assistance. So let's not get ahead of ourselves, we just finished the Wuhan tournament, evaluation of the GILAS program would take some time, formulation of a new program or identification of what adjustments to be made to the current program would also take some time but the fellows involved like MVP had other important things to do, so please kindly give them time to contemplate and think on what to do next.

Like any ordinary Filipino, Eala is both dissapointed about the last 2 losses but he is proud of the achievement made by the team which previous teams failed to do. If there's somebody who will know the sacrifices and sufferings the team had gone thru, it is Eala who should know. Why should there be any vindication for another's failure .... if he has no more love for this team, he would not have gone out of his way in having FIBA World HQ involved in the eligibility problems we had with FIBA-Asia officials.

                              • The fact is, where after the 2013 asian championship for the 2014 world.

Gilas players i think would be given the chance to represent again.
                                The possible scenario would be

Lassiter, Aguilar, Casio, Williams, De Ocampo, Lutz - could be pulled out from the PBA
I would like to have Castro and hopefully he will improve his outside shooting (could be possible due to belonging in the TNT group)

The Problem on this Line up is that we have lots of PBA players - the Ideal would be only 4 to 6 from the PBA and that would make it to a 16 man pool.

So from the list above probably only 4 at most 6 would be selected depending on the position where we are weak with the new Gilas or Sinag

That would leave us to 8-10 players including reserves as regular members.
                                What then would we need?

                                Douthit and Tiu - 100%

Probably Slaughter and hopefully Fajardo for Center slot (remember Marcus is not getting any younger and we cant rely on him like we did on the last tournament)
Ravena 5'11 (1-2) could still be very young and Parks 6'4 (2-3) may have a chance
If we could get Banchero 6'2 for the 1-2 spot (a bigger guard who can shoot and defend big guards)
Only if Stanhinger 6'8 could play for us to fill up the 3-4 position
                                Ramos (6'6) playing at 3-4
                                Taha (6'7) playing at 3-4
and Hopefully someone who is 6'6 above but plays the 2-3 spot (a danny seigle type)

Lots of Players from the PBA who would be good to be added at the team (washington, devance, Yap and others) Unfortunately i think it would be difficult.
