if there's an existing thread, please merge...but i did try the search function and i'm pleasantly surprised we (apparently) don't have a thread for this yet.

by far the best name i've seen so far in a philippine basketball lineup is (get ready for this!) Easy Lover San Juan, #4 and playing center for the Our Lady of Fatima University Phoenix. and i can't believe i just saw this a few minutes ago! original article here...

http://www.inboundpass.com/2009/07/21/naascu-season-9-official-team-lineups/

come to think of it, he's up there on a worldwide scale, with the likes of former washington wizard/providence friar God Shammgod... :D

also worth mentioning...

Marc Stevens Victoria (ex-purefoods 12th man, apparently named after an adult film contemporary of John Holmes)

Abraham Columbus King (which i believe is abe king's birth name)

Michael "Whitey" Almonte (nothing special about his birth name, but if you followed the MBA, you'll realize the irony of his nickname)

may i add this guy( renato lozada) very effective guy during his micca days...too bad he passed away last year...

renato lozada? doesn't ring a bell. been researching the MICAA on-and-off for the past few years, but don't remember anyone by that name...

...and if i'm not mistaken, jun lozada's real 1st name is rodolfo. close, but no cigar. :D

anyway, i forgot to mention Andretti Mari Stevens from this year's MIT lineup. his first name obviously came from former F1/Indy 500 champion Mario Andretti...

I won't be surprised if Marc Stevens Victoria has brothers named Ron Jeremy and George Estregan. :D

CEU has an Axl Garcia in their lineup...wonder if his second first name is "Rose", or "Ross" to make it sound more masculine... :D

i forgot about cipriano, but i believe there's someone in one of the UAAP lineups whose first name is also Bon Jovi...

Lucrecio "Luke" Dacula, the former Noritake guard, has always been the target of taunts and name-calling by basketball fans. Always being called Dracula and Vampira, Luke had his last name changed to Dator, claiming that it was a combination of Dacula and his maternal surname Tortor.

How come there was no local spoof in the 1970's action series of Starsky and Hutch? It could have been "Jaworski and Kutch", starring Robert Jaworski, Sr. and Rudolph Kutch.

Despite the Filipino's penchant for spoofs (McKenna's Gold became Mekeni's Gold, Batman and Robin became Batman and Ruben), we missed out on that one.

Sir, for a Crispa fan, I was surprised you missed out one of my favorite imports - Allan Green.

Gary, my man in MyPBA:

I didn't say it was complete. It was merely representative. At least I like the fact that Allan Green really wore the moss green uniform of the Crispa Redmanizer, much the same way Sean Green wore the green Sta. Lucia uniforms.

Shades of Lewis Brown and Ricardo Brown wearing the brown jerseys of Great Taste.

In the 1998 Centennial/Governors' Cup, the Sta. Lucia Realtors paraded the import pair of Joseph Temple and Kirk King.

That combination remind us of that song by Rainbow, the venerable slow-rock and videoke staple "Temple of the King".

And the names of those players have religious significance, too. "Kirk" means church in Scots. So here we have a temple and a church together, both places of worship. Sayang hindi nila kakampi si Cadel Mosqueda, whose name reminds us naman of "mosque".

Simply unforgettable:

Rudy Enterina
"Naning" Valenciano
Willie Generalao
"Ponkee" Alolor
Bernie Fabiosa

Why do big men have interesting-sounding names?

Ducut
Mamaril
Babilonia
Taulava
Balingit

There was one stand up comic (contemporary of Chokoleit when he was just starting in the Laffline/Punchline scene) who, by virtue of his size, used the stage name "Adducul." :D:D:D

Maximizing the jersey space for their names:

Abbarientos
Vanlandingham
Urbiztondo
Patrimonio
Arespacochaga

Maybe they can borrow from:

Co
Tiu
Lao
Lim

Just need to include:

Al-Hussaini
Al-Jamal

Al-varez
Al-mario
Al-tamirano
Al-olor

Some players that really played together.

Pidofeihl - The tandem of Pido Jarencio and EJ Feihl during their playing days with Ginebra in the mid 1990s.

Gabe Mercado - Welcoat's one-two scoring punch of Gabe Norwood and Solomon Mercado before the latter was traded to Meralco

A Bad and A Good - The late basketball analyst Butch Maniego coined this moniker to describe the St. Benilde duo of Juan Abad and Gilbert Good:)

Alexander Potot
Sixto Agbay

Wow you still remember those names? Potot played for Squibb while Agbay played for Seven-Up, although he was an YCO Painter in the MICAA. What about Agbay's Seven-Up teammamte Pepito Malanay? The 70s ancestor of Rudy Lingganay!

Here's another trivia for PBA history buffs regarding Sixto Agbay and Pepito Malanay. In the middle of the 1975 first conference,Seven-Up decided to change their jersey numbers and pattern it ala NBA style of numbering. Since they were Seven-Up, they used the 7 as a theme. Some of the players were:

07. Cecilio "Ching-ching" Marcelino
17. Rafael "Baby Boy" Morales
27. Cesar Arpilleda (?)
37. Pepito Malanay
47. Sixto Agbay
57. Marcelino "Jinky" Simbulan
67. Ernesto "Ernie" de Leon
72. Alfredo "Freddie" Enriquez
97. Ramon "Jumbo" Salvador

Jimmy Santos was also a member of this team, but I never saw him play and thus I cannot recall what number he wore. Maybe he got all his training as a comedian playing for this hilarious team.

The following season, when Lauro " The Fox" Mumar and his son Larry and Danny Florencio joined Seven-Up, the numbers were sanitized and also the players.

The Bola-bolas were a basketball family in Letran. Marlon Bola-bola established an NCAA Juniors scoring record when me and my brother were Grade 6 sudents in SJLC in 1976-77. Erwin was a member of the 1986-87 back to back NCAA champions. Were there other Bola-bolas pa ba?

Last I heard of Erwin was when he was on the coaching staff of the old Barako Coffee Masters. Marlon's record still stands today, I believe.

It's quite common to have two players with the same surname (not necessarily related) playing at the same time in one team. The most I am able to recall was when there were three "Sisons" playing for the Ateneo Srs. team in one season (pun intended) - Rainier Sison and twin brothers Brian and Brandon. Any other team with three or more same-named players in one roster at a given time? ;)

The 2007-08 Tennessee Volunteers team in the US NCAA has three Smiths who are not related (Tyler, JaJan and Ramar). Duke's Plumlee brothers were on the same line-up last year, Miles (senior), Mason (junior) and Marshall (freshman), although Marshall was a medical red-shirt at that time and was not able to play a single minute last year despite being issued a uniform number. Still thinking of a local example.:)

I'm pretty sure there was a Cruz brigade back in the day :)

Believe it or not, while there have been at least 7 Cruzes that have played in the PBA (Mon, Jervy, Marvin, Celino, Nat, Nilo and Carlito), not once did any of these players were part of a common team. I didn't include the Dela Cruzes though (Art, Bong, Tony, Onchie, Bien) as they are different.

The Codinera brothers (Harmon, Jerry, Pat) have the distinction of being the only sibling triumvirate in PBA history. There have been plenty of duos (Cezars, Loyzagas, Reynosos, Deles, Aldanese twins, Pinedas, Dela Rosas, Tuadles, De Ocampos, Cleofases, Clarinos, Narons, Guzman twins, etc) but only the scions of baseball great Boy Codinera formed a troika. However, not once did any of these three play for a single team. The closest who could have accomplished that would have been the Pumaren siblings. Unfortunately, the eldest, Derrick, didn't get to play in the PBA.

The most number of players with the same surname is actually the Reyeses. My count, they're close to ten, if I'm not mistaken (Raffi, Ryan, Elmer, Billy, Jun, Eric, Jay-R, Rob, Edmund, Jai). Curiously, Elmer is the father of Raffi, Billy, Jun and Jai are related, while Eric and Rob are also related.

The Santoses come next. I think they have nine in the list - Arwind being the only player suited up so far. The other Santoses include now actor Jimmy, Fil-For Rommel, Rodney, Rey, Abby, Joel, Paeng, and Vir.

Another popular surname is Rodriguez. There have been aplenty - with one presently playing for Rain or Shine in Larry. Others include Bubuy, Erick, Omanzie, Ulysses, Carlos and Porfirio.

Garvo Lanete is likely to join the next draft, and it's most likely he'll be picked, unlike older brother Chico who was undrafted but later on eventually signed. In case brother Von Harry gets a chance to suit up in the PBA, they'll be the second brother trio after the Codineras to play in the league. Now if only they could still get Al to start getting into basketball... :)

Another band of brothers who could've played in the PBA were the Menors. However, only the youngest, Ogie, made it to the big league. The older two - Romar and Rolly - only got to play in the MBA. The Gamboas could have made the list too but only Arnold and Allan made it to the PBA. Archie and another Gamboa brother did not make the grade. Andy and Danny Seigle have another brother, Mark, who only played in the barangay leagues. :)

Alaska is the Best !!!

Philippine Basketball Association Best Player (http://fydesigns.ph)

Alaska is owned by a traitor.
Alaska should change their name from alaska aces to alaska puppies. they are puppies of WSU.
Tenorio followed his heart and has patriotism in him that he disobeyed WSU's order to not play in the national team.
That is why he was traded.

your alaska players can only play inside the house. Does not even care to join the real boys outside in the neighborhood.
Keep stuffing that photo album inside your house while your neighbors are getting part of the billboard. lolers

No matter how supportive WSU and alaska were of the national team in the past, what they did recently erases it all.
It is like a good priest convicted of child abuse.

Alaska is simply not the best. They are just good.

Since the thread refers to the best names in PHL basketball, and since we're in the middle of discussion among siblings, here's a combination of both...

In the 80's, there was a sibling act that played for the Letran Knights in the NCAA. I'm not sure if my recollection is correct but for what I know, there were at least 3 Bola-Bola's that played for the Knights in that decade alone. Yes, Bola-Bola, not the siopao variety - Edwin, Erwin and Elmer (if I'm not mistaken). The eldest played alongside Itoy Esguerra, Mon San Juan and Bong Aninon in the 1980 champion team. The second one played alongside Avelino "Samboy" Lim and Romy Ang in the mid-80's while the third teamed up with the likes of Art Ayson, Fernando Libed and Jing Ruiz.

Toyota had 3 Kings: Abe, and imports Victor and Bruce.

First two got to play together, but I believe the late Bruce "Sky" King came earlier (although both Victor and Bruce got to play alongside Andrew Fields at different times).

Now there's this local dude with a ticklish name: Jercules Tangkay.

Sounds like "skinny hunk", or "ripped stem" depending on how you look at it. ;)

And another dude whose surname sounds like that legume that is mistaken for a nut. If you didn't like him, then you have a "Pinat allergy" (groannnnnnn....)

I was writing down notes on PBA players directory when I discovered this, it took 35 years when the PBA had a "U" player, family names ending in U

Jonathan Uyloan of Rain or Shine and Joshua Urbiztondo of Barangay Ginebra, similarly both are guards and were undrafted in 2009.

Will there ever be a "X" and "Z" player in the PBA.

The closest to this happening was when DLSU center Francis Zamora was drafted by Santa Lucia but was left unsigned.

However, there was import Jim Zoet of Finance Incorporated.
