rind said: He's my favourite player of all time. I had to do it... stuart edit: There were two old threads about Petar Naumoski, so I combined them...

Although it is not "officially" announced yet, Naumoski's retirement is written in some websites... (I hope he changes his mind and will continue)... I compiled some information about this player who has a "special meaning" in the heart of Turkish basketball fans...

    Career:
1989-1990 Jugoplastika Split (He was 21 years old and was on the bench)
1990-1991 Pop'84 Split (he was on the bench)
    1991-1992 Rabotnicki Skopje
1992-1993 Efes Pilsen (played Final at Cup-2/European Cup) (won TBL title)
1993-1994 Efes Pilsen (played Quarterfinal play-off at Euroleague) (won TBL title)
1994-1995 Benetton Treviso (WON Cup-2/European Cup) (won Italian Cup)
1995-1996 Efes Pilsen (WON Korac Cup) (won TBL title)
1996-1997 Efes Pilsen (played Quarterfinal play-off at Euroleague) (won TBL title)
1997-1998 Efes Pilsen (played Quarterfinal play-off at Euroleague) (played TBL play-off final)
1998-1999 Efes Pilsen (played Quarterfinal play-off at Euroleague) (played TBL play-off final)
    1999-2000 did not play
2000-2001 Benetton Treviso (played Quarterfinal play-off at Euroleague)
2001-2002 Montepaschi Siena (WON Cup-2/Saporta Cup) (played final at Italian Cup)
2002-2003 Olimpia 'Pippo' Milano (Italy A-1)
2003-2004 Olimpia 'Breil' Milano & Ulker Istanbul (played Top 16 at Euroleague) (played TBL play-off final)
He was the 3rd PG of Split. So he did not take minutes there. When he was playing for Rabotnicki(in his hometown club), he was "discovered" by Oktay Mahmuti (ex assistant, current head coach of Efes) and signed with Efes in 1992. In a short time he succeeded to become the leader of the team and a star in Europe...

    His statistics at European Cups:
    1992-1993(European Cup): 31 mpg, 17 ppg, 4.3 apg, 2.7 rpg, 1.7 spg % 62 FG (142/228)

He was chosen "best European player in Europe" by BasketNews(famous French magazine) at 1996-1997 season...

Also, according to "basket-stats.info", he was chosen in the:

    - First Dream Team of EL at 1998-1999 season
    - Third Dream Team of EL at 2000-2001 season

FIBA organized 4 "EuroStars" games and Naumoski participated in 3 of them. (in 1996, 1997 and 1998)

A lady Turkish writer, Yasemin Bayer published a book about him named "Star of Basketball: Petar Naumoski" in Turkey...

    His statistics at Italy A-1:
    1994-1995 Benetton(40 games): 34 mpg, 18 ppg, 2.7 apg, 3 rpg % 65 FG (419/644) % 50.3 3pts (95/189)

He scored 48 points (in 45 minutes) versus Virtus Bologna at 02-03 season (his career high in Italy)...

At 94-95 season his team Benetton competed in European Cup. At the semi-final play-offs, their rival Olympique D'Antibes had the home court advantage. The first game was in Treviso and Benetton lost the game! Benetton have to win 2 games at away against David Rivers' Antibes to deserve the final... Yes, they did it!! Thanks to a great Naumoski...

    Benetton Treviso - Olympique D'Antibes: 88 - 95
    Olympique D'Antibes - Benetton Treviso: 93 - 99
    Olympique D'Antibes - Benetton Treviso: 83 - 87

In the second game Naumoski had 44 points, 2 assists, 1 rebound and in the third game he had 26 points, 3 assists, 6 rebounds...

Final game was played in Istanbul and their rival was Taugres Vitoria... Naumoski had 26 points, 5 assists, 2 rebounds in the final game and won the Cup...

One year later, Naumoski(Efes) eliminated A.Djordjevic's, C.Myers' Teamsystem Bologna at semi-final and D.Bodiroga's, G.F-ucka's, R.Blackman's Stefanel Milano at final and brought the cup to Turkey which is the FIRST AND ONLY europe cup of a Turkish basketball team...

His performance at semi-final and final games:

    Efes - Teamsystem: 102 - 78 (20 pts, 10 ast, 1 reb, 3 stl)
    Teamsystem - Efes: 97 - 91 (8 pts, 6 ast, 4 reb, 2 stl)

    Efes - Stefanel: 76 - 68 (31 pts, 10 ast, 3 reb, 1 stl)
    Stefanel - Efes: 77 - 70 (26 pts, 1 ast, 2 reb)

6 years later, with Montepaschi, he scored 23 points which is floor-high (+3 ast+2 reb) in the final game of Saporta Cup against Pamesa Valencia. He was 32 years old...

As for me, Naumoski has 2 misfortunes in his career:

    1) He was not able to play in Final Four with Efes... He missed Final Four ticket 4 times at the last rounds. His dreams ended at quarterfinals every time... (Efes held the home-court advantage 2 times but again lost Final Four chance in front of more than 12.000 Turkish fans in Istanbul)

    2) His national team was too weak. .. Because of this, he couldn't show himself at championships, EC, WC, OG... (except 99 EC) He was not as lucky as (for example) Djordjevic who is playing for a strong national team which is a regular member of championships...

At an interview, he said(I'll try to translate): "We(Efes) were not able to qualify Final Fours in that period. It's my biggest distress. But I think our other foreign players were not efficient for this target... The club made "wrong" choices in foreign transfers... Also some tactical mistakes at quarterfinals finished our Final4 dreams."

Let's look at these "disagreeable" memories:

    93-94 EL Quarterfinal

    Barcelona - Efes: 54 - 50
    Efes - Barcelona: 73 - 64
    Efes - Barcelona: 62 - 76

    Other foreigners: only Larry Richard

    96-97 EL Quarterfinal

    Efes - ASVEL: 87 - 71
    ASVEL - Efes: 80 - 70
    Efes - ASVEL: 57 - 62

Other foreigners: Derrick Alston, Vassili Karassev

    97-98 EL Quarterfinal

    Benetton - Efes: 67 - 57
    Efes - Benetton: 59 - 58
    Benetton - Efes: 76 - 68

Other foreigners: Rod Sellers, Brian Howard (Naumoski were injured just before the quarterfinal series and did not play against Benetton)

    98-99 EL Quarterfinal

    Zalgiris - Efes: 69 - 68
    Efes - Zalgiris: 70 - 84

Other foreigners: Zoran Savic, Predrag Drobnjak (Savic played in quarterfinal but he did not play much at this season because of a chronic injury)

1989-1990 Jugoplastika Split (He was 21 years old and was on the bench)

1990-1991 Pop'84 Split (he was on the bench)
...no shame to be just sitting on the bench in that team

    2) His national team was too weak. .. Because of this, he couldn't show himself at championships, EC, WC, OG... (except 99 EC) He was not as lucky as (for example) Djordjevic who is playing for a strong national team which is a regular member of championships...
I never thought about it this way, but you're mostlikely right, I'm not any expert in FRYOMacedonian's basketball but imo they could build a very good team actually, but their basketball association is not interested enough to bring in Naumovski, Ilievski, Stefanov into the team... too bad-they'd been quite good

Turkish shooting guard Ufuk Sarýca was the teammate of Naumoski in the '90s... (in the starting five)... Both Sarýca and Naumoski left Efes after 98-99 season and now they are retiring at the same time... Sarýca's last team was Besiktas... He also played in Bnei Hertzlia(Israel) for a short time...

Ufuk Sarýca has 3 unforgettable games for Efes fans:

    93-94 EL group game

    Panathinaikos 67 - Efes Pilsen 82

Sarýca had 34 pts, 7 reb, 1 stl

    -----------

    94-95 EL group game

    Olympiakos 56 - Efes Pilsen 79

Sarýca had 23 pts, 3 reb, 5 stl

    -----------

    95-96 Korac Cup

Semifinal first game: Efes Pilsen 102 - Teamsystem Bologna 78

    Sarýca had 34 pts, 2 reb, 2 ast, 4 stl (9/12 triples!!)

He played in Herzlyia indeed. The team had lots of expectations from him at that time, but he was in a poor shape and didn't remind his great form from the happy days in Pilsen.
Naumoski was a great player but most of all a great winner, who always excelled against Israely teams. I once read an article about him in the newspaper, which describes the fanatism that Pilsen fans have displayed for him. He was such an admired personality, that Turkish girls' dream was to marry him.

    Petar Naumoski
The guy you see in my my avatar. I'm sure there are many things people here would say about him, but now, I just want to quote some comments made by users of eksisozluk.com.

    - One of the best guards of his time in Europe. Symbolized with Efes Pilsen. Turkish youngsters used to choose his name when playing bball instead of Michael Jordan’s.

    - His unexpected, extremely casual three-pointers collapsed many teams’ defences. His worst trait was being “slow”. It was not possible to see him starting a fast-break. He used to wait for whole team to settle and then make a 3-pointer, unnecessarily running Efes players. But his contribution to Turkish basketbal cannot be overlooked, his quality cannot be ignored.

    - He used to keep the ball at least 25 seconds in his hands, when the offensive time limit was 30 secs.

    - He used to wipe the sweat on his forehead with the shoulder of his jersey a million times a game.

    - Even though his contribution to Turkish bball cannot be denied, he had some bad aspects. Guys like Volkan Aydin and Ufuk Sarica lost desire for the game because of him. Hustle and strugle in defence and then return to defence without touching the ball at all in offence. Defence may also be important, but a player’s heart wants to attack, wants to shoot the ball. However, there’s a guy over there holding the ball all the time and not sharing it with anyone, no matter what you do to attrack his attention, even when you dyed your hair to blonde or threaten about leaving the club.

    - The player who made me love the number 7, the player I’ve never seen smiling!

    - The player who could make lay-ups walking.

    - About The Beatles, someone said “what makes them special is the impression they created that everyone could perform their music”. I think the same thing is valid for Naumoski. Petsy was not very quick, very tall or athletic, at all. He could finish any game with 20 points and 7 asists with the same exact moves, and without showing any traces of excitement or happiness, just by heart. Any youngster who was watching him that night used to feel that he could make a 3 pointer if he went outside and just shoot after wiping his forehead with the shoulder of his t-shirt.

    - The man who made Efes Pilsen called Petar Pilsen with his playing style.

Of course it has to do with Zalgiris anywhere I speak But lets remember.

Zalgiris made it to Euroleague playoffs in 98-99 and beated Ulker 2-0 in quarterfinal while being underdog. The next one in the way was again Turkish team and it was Efes. This time it was described as unbeatable opponent because Naumoski was 25 cms higher than his PG opponent Edney. It was called as a nightmare matchup for Edney and because of that it seemed we have no chances, but we had home court advantage. Anyway we didnt need that as we won 2-0. I dont remember the specifics of both games anymore, but coach Kazlauskas solved Naumoski question. The game in Kaunas was hell though as we won only by 1 point, 69-68. The game in Abdi Ipekci was a bit easier, I still remember not much experienced at that time Eurelijus Zukauskas dunked 6 times in that game silencing the crazy crowd. Still throughout the game you couldnt believe that Euroleague debutant can win it in Abdi Ipekci and they had to collapse at one time or another, but they didnt. You know what heppaned in Munich next.

I remember that season... in the first group, Zalgiris was in the same group with Fenerbahçe, and I'm sure you remember that team. It was a luxury team in fact with M. Abdulrauf, Z. Tabak, M. Milic, C. McRea, and I. Kutluay... In the first game of the season, Fenerbahce won against Zalgiris with a big margin I think... but then, Zalgiris made an impressive job! Yes, Tyus Edney was small, but UNSTOPPABLE!! we all know his achievements... and it's not the first time Naumoski was beaten by another player... Tofas won two back-to-back championships for example by shutting down him (Tofas guard Alper Yilmaz got the nickname "handcuffs" after those series)... As mentioned by some commentors above, he was not the best athlete or best shooter, or he was not unbeatable... But he was like a revolutionist! at least to my eyes. He and Efes Pilsen showed it's not impossible to be succesful in European level.... he made all the youth of that time love bball in Turkey... and with his ugly playing style, with his wiping his sweat away, and with the great stop-jump shots, he'll be remembered forever as a true legend for Turkish fans...

Of course I remember that team and that game. Kutluay was hitting everything. Game vs Fenerbahce was our debut in Euroleague after so many times trying to get there (I mean after independence). Even if we lost that game with double digit margin it was seen that Zalgiris can play in that level. We prooved that later to the very end

In the 2001-02 season, he won the Saporta Cup and he was officially named MVP of the Final game.

When he was 36 years old, he came to Ulker you know and:

          - won the Turkish Cup. He was the top scorer of the Final game with 20 points. (Ulker's rival was Efes Pilsen in the final)

          - dished 10 assists against Efes in TBL playoff finals.

          - beat Cibona Zagreb with an excellent one-man show in the 4th period! Read this:

The official site of Euroleague Basketball. Check out live matches, stats, standings, teams, players, interviews, fantasy challenge and much more.

You will find a "historical" photo of him, taken in 1996... Move to the bottom of the page and look for "1996 coppa korac-...":

a quote from an old interview:
The official site of Euroleague Basketball. Check out live matches, stats, standings, teams, players, interviews, fantasy challenge and much more.

          - At 21, you played with the greatest team of the era, the Jugoplastika of Toni Kukoc, Dino Radja, Zoran Savic, Dusko Ivanovic and coach Bozidar Maljkovic. What memories persist from that special time?

          - Playing and living with them helped me to grow up as player and man. I have one big memory: it was harder to play during the practices than in the official games! We won our games easily, but every day it was a big fight to win during the practices and many times the second lineup won these challenges. I learned to work hard every day of the season ever since that experience.

You don't know how bad I wish to see him coaching a(ny) team in Turkiye.

I have the presume he'll be as big a legend as a coach.
